Georgia Week 5 Notes and Scores

Surprise, We’re 5-0!

Meadowcreek improved to 5-0 with a 42-28 victory over Lakeside-Dekalb (1-4). Chauncey Williams rushed for over 300 yards and five touchdowns for the Mustangs. The victory assures the Mustangs their first non-losing season since 1997. Meadowcreek is now 1-0 in region play and will face Berkmar (0-5) next week and with a victory would clinch the first winning season in school history since 1990 (the schools fifth year of football).  Through five games Williams has amassed over 1200 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns.

Douglas County (5-0) defeated region and family feud foe Langston Hughes (3-2) 30-27 in a back and forth affair featuring a pair of solid running backs showcasing their talents. Douglas County jumped out to a 10-0 lead after a pick six touchdown by Xavier Hopson and a field goal. Langston Hughes then took a 14-10 lead after a Caleb Vaughn to Nae’Saan Dickerson touchdown pass and a Christian Roylaston touchdown run in the second quarter which held until halftime.  After another Royalston touchdown run put Langston Hughes up 20-10, Uriah West rushed for a pair of touchdowns for a 23-20 Tigers lead. Royalston and the Panthers was not done as Royalston ripped off a 70-yard touchdown to for a 27-23 lead. Douglas County would get the last word when Marquise Collins connected with Dariyan Wiley for a 75-yard touchdown pass with less than two minutes remaining for the go-ahead and eventual game-winning touchdown.  The win marked the first 5-0 start for Douglas County since 2002.

One-Sided Clash In Classic City!

Clarke Central (4-1) jumped on Cedar Shoals (3-1) early and often in a 48-7 rout of their crosstown rivals in the region opener for both. The Gladiators scored three defensive touchdowns (pick six, scoop and score, and a fumble recovery in the end zone). Jack Mangel connected with Jacob Dula on a touchdown pass for a 7-0 Clarke Central lead, Mangel passed for two touchdowns in the game. Cedar Shoals responded with a drive that stalled deep in Gladiator territory and missed a field goal, the contest was never close again. Clarke Central came one point shy of tying the all-time series record for points scored by one team (49) while posting all 48 points in the first half. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock. Jonathan Sewell and O’Brien Bryant rushed for touchdowns for Clarke Central.

Other Games/Scores Of Interest

Ira Henderson returned his second kickoff return for a touchdown this season as Stephenson (3-2) defeated Mundy’s Mill (0-5) 38-14. Javier Morton returned an interception for a touchdown for Stephenson.

Taurean Taylor rushed for three touchdowns while Travon Ford hooked up with Josh Vann on a pair of touchdown passes as Tucker (4-1) shutout ML King (2-3) 44-0. David Davis rushed for a touchdown and Jalen Jefferson recorded a safety for the Tigers.

Tift (6-0) defeated Coffee (3-1) 33-31 on a game-winning field goal by Fernando Ramirez with five seconds remaining. Coffee overcame an early 21-0 hole to take a 31-30 lead with a Wade Sumner to Dalrone Donaldson touchdown pass with just over four minutes remaining. Tift quarterback Griffin Collier finished with over 300 yards passing, four touchdowns, two of them to standout wide receiver Rashod Bateman. Dalrone Donaldson caught two touchdowns for Coffee. Tift improved to 6-0, it’s best start since 1993.

Carterville (5-0) won it’s 35th consecutive game with a 41-7 victory over Cedartown. Trevor Lawrence passed for three touchdowns while Rico Frye rushed for and caught a touchdown for Cartersville.  Cartersville had held its last three opponents (Calhoun, Westlake and Cedartown) to 18 total points.

Tri-Cities (1-3) won its first game of the season to snap a 13-game losing streak with a 41-6 win over Creekside (0-5). Tarez Huddleston passed for four touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Creekside has only scored 22 total points this season.

McEachern (3-2)  trailed 13-9 at halftime to Camden County (2-3) before scoring 29 unanswered points in the second half to win 38-13. Jaron Hall returned a punt for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass for the Indians. Malik Evans rushed for two touchdowns and Ali Scott had a rushing touchdown for McEachern. Logan Berryhill caught a touchdown for Camden County.

Colquitt County (5-1) used four field goals from Ryan Fitzgerald to defeat Valdosta (2-4) 27-0. Ty Leggett scored the only offensive touchdown of the game with a four-yard run late in the second quarter.

Grayson (4-0) 74-0 over International School of Broward (FL) (1-2). DJ Irons passed for four touchdowns while J’Kori Jones passed for three touchdowns for the Rams. Grayson is now 3-0 this season in out-of-state games and will play their final non-Georgia opponent this Friday when they host Ramsay (AL) (4-1). Ramsay has won three straight games and is currently ranked in the Alabama Class 6A Top 5.

Lovejoy (3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 41-33 victory over Drew (1-4). Zion Custis rushed for three touchdowns for the Wildcats.

Cedar Grove (5-0) won their 15th straight game by defeating the last team to beat them, Westminster (1-4) 41-10. The 15-game winning streak is a new school record.

Rome (4-0) defeated Paulding County (1-4) 62-0. Rome will host Carrollton (4-0) in a class 5A top 10 matchup this week. Carrollton defeated Woodland-Cartersville (2-3) 41-6.

East Coweta (4-1) defeated Arabia Mountain (3-2) 48-14; East Coweta has won four in a row since their season opening loss to Lovejoy. Arabia Mountain has dropped two in a row since a 3-0 start.

Winder-Barrow (5-0) defeated North Oconee (1-4) 17-14

North Gwinnett (4-1)  defeated Mountain View (4-1) 27-14

Westlake (2-3) defeated Lithonia (1-4) 45-12

Hapeville Charter (5-0) defeated South Atlanta (2-4) 42-7

 

 

 

 

Georgia HSFB Week 4 Notes and Scores

South Pointe (SC) Tops Buford

Buford (2-1) suffers its first-ever out-of-state loss falling 33-27 to South Pointe (SC) (4-0). South Pointe quarterback Derion Kendrick powered the Stallions victory rushing for nearly 200 yards and two touchdowns while passing for a pair of touchdowns. Buford entered the game allowing only 110 yards rushing through two games, Kendrick rushed for 110 in the first half.

Buford used special teams to take an early lead and to stay in the game multiple times. Mick Reese recovered a high snap on a punt in the end zone for a touchdown to crack the scoring seal as Buford led 7-0.

South Pointe answered on the following possession going 77 yards capping the drive with a Kendrick to Scott Robinson Jr 38-yard touchdown pass to knot it 7-7. In the second quarter Kendrick danced around Buford’s defense capping  another 77-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run while evading several Buford defenders before lowering his shoulder for the score and the 14-7 lead. Kendrick accounted for every yard on the drive.

Buford’s special teams got back in on the act again as Eli Turner raced of the right edge to block BT Potter’s 32-yard field goal attempt. Buford cashed it in 61 yards later with an Anthony Grant 3-yard touchdown run pulling even 14-14, which stood til halftime.

South Pointe’s defense led by Eli Adams and Deangelo Huskey gave Buford fits all night. On Buford’s opening second half possession, Jaylen Mahoney intercepted Aaron McLaughlin setting up a 36-yard touchdown pass from Kendrick to Robinson on the following play for a 21-14 South Pointe lead.

The team exchanged punts and again it was Buford’s special teams putting up points as Austin Turner returned a punt 70-yards for a touchdown to pull Buford to within 21-20 with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter after the extra point attempt failed due to a bad snap and hold.

Potter added a field goal for South Pointe in the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 24-20. Buford answered that score with Grant’s second touchdown run of the game early in the fourth quarter for a 27-24 Buford lead.

The lead was short lived as Kendrick engineered a Stallions drive that he finished with a 17-yard touchdown run for a 28-27 lead. BT Potter added his second field goal of the game to extend South Pointe’s lead to 31-27. After a South Pointe fumble, Buford’s McLaughlin was called for intentional grounding in the end zone for the final 33-27 margin.

Other Games:

Sharrod Frazier rushed for a pair of touchdowns as Brunswick (2-1) had five different players rush for a total of six touchdowns in a 43-27 victory over Camden County. Brooks Bryan passed for two touchdowns and  Jeremiah Compton return an interception 99 yards for a touchdown for Camden County. Brunswick’s victory snapped an 11-game losing streak to Camden County.

Clarke Central’s O’Brien Barnett rushed for three touchdowns while Jonathan Sewell rushed for a 92 yard touchdown as the Gladiators (3-1) defeated North Oconee (1-3) 47-20. Gladiator quarterback Jack Mangel passed for a pair of touchdowns and rushed for a touchdown. Kapre Forbes continued his excellent season in the punt return department with a 74-yard return that set up Barnett’s final touchdown run.

Brookwood (2-2) used a dominating rushing attack to upset Colquitt County (4-1) 45-25. Dante Brown rushed for over 250 yards and five touchdowns for the Broncos. Brookwood led 21-0 after the first quarter with all three touchdown coming via Brown. Daijun Edwards rushed for two touchdowns for Colquitt County.

Winder-Barrow (4-0) scored 17 unanswered points to defeat Loganville (0-4) 17-14. Brock Landis rushed for the go-ahead touchdown with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter for the Bulldoggs. Jamar Mack rushed for a touchdown for the Bulldoggs. Winder-Barrow is 4-0 for the first time since 2007.

Meadowcreek (4-0) won its fourth straight game and is 4-0 for the first-time ever after a 38-0 victory over Lithonia (1-3). Chauncey Williams rushed for over 200 yards and four touchdowns. Williams has rush for over 100 yards in every game so far this season.

Stephenson(2-2) handed Lovejoy (2-3) its third straight loss with a 14-7 win. Darren Parker and Deondre Jackson rushed for a touchdown for Stephenson. Love’s joys only score came on a  late in the second quarter to give Stephenson a 14-0 lead. Jordan Huntington passed for a touchdown for Lovejoy, who wasted a number of scoring chances in the red zone most of the night.

Georgia HSFB Notes, Scores Of Interest Week 3

Georgia Week 3 of high school football was played over the weekend with only a handful of games cancelled or postponed due the approaching Hurricane Irma. Most of those games were in the southeastern coastal portions of Georgia after mandatory evacuations were issued. Here is a look at some the games of interest from Week 3 in Georgia

Cartersville’s (4-0) Trevor Lawrence passed for over 280 yards and 3 touchdowns while Rico Frye rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass as class 4A Cartersville defeated 7A Westlake (1-2) 38-5.  EJ Turner caught a pair of touchdown passes for the Purple Hurricanes who won their 34th consecutive game.

Mays (2-1) won its second consecutive game since a season opening loss to Stockbridge with a 32-20 region 5-6A victory over Langston Hughes (2-1). Jaquez Milam connected with Christian Royalston on a 42-yard pass to give Langston Hughes an early 7-0 lead. Later Mays pulled to within 7-6 on a touchdown run by Tyree Nelson. Mays took a 12-7 into halftime after quarterback Jaquez Evans hooked up with Amir Abdur Rahman on a 56-yard touchdown pass.  In the third quarter the team quickly exchanged touchdowns as Langston Hughes’ TJ Portress briefly gave the Panthers an 14-12 lead on a 4-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing kickoff Ihbin Tophia returned it 80 yards for a touchdown for an 18-14 lead. The Raiders expanded the lead to 25-14 on Nelson’s second touchdown run of the game. Antoino Grier block a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown and 32-14 Mays lead in the fourth quarter. Langston Hughes completed the scoring with a Tyrea Swanson 10-yard touchdown run for the final 32-20 margin.

Meadowcreek (3-0) improved to 3-0 for the first time in the programs 32-year history with a 29-27 win over Forsyth Central (0-3). Meadowcreek, located in Norcross, Ga in Gwinnett County, is 73% Hispanic. The Mustangs have one of the largest offensive lines in Georgia averaging around 320 pounds which paved the way for two rushing touchdowns by Chauncey Williams (180-plus yards rushing). Jeremiah Caldwell had a receiving touchdown while Alonzo Howard returned an interception for a touchdown. Meadowcreek led 26-6 at one point before Forsyth Central rallied. The Bulldogs closed to within 26-20 on a late third quarter touchdown run by Devron Orasn. Meadowcreek added its cushion early in the fourth quarter on a field goal by Christopher  Linares to put the Mustangs up 29-20. Forsyth Central added another Orasn touchdown to make it 29-27 however on their next possession were unable to convert a fourth down which sealed the victory for Meadowcreek.

Cedar Shoals (3-0) defeated North Oconee (1-2) in dramatic fashion 13-6. Ken Johnson rushed for two touchdown but it was his 5-yard touchdown with 38 seconds remaining in the game that propelled the Jaguars to the victory. Cedar Shoals has won the last two meeting between the two schools.

Stephenson (1-2) defeated Southwest Dekalb (2-2) 31-18 in a sloppy game featured five fumbles between the two teams . Ira Henderson return the second half kickoff 86 yards fro a touchdown to jump start Stephenson after trailing 6-0 at the half.  Stephenson’s Deshon Stoudemire caught a pair of touchdowns, one from Ga’von Wray another from Daren Parker. Justin Tomlin passed for three touchdowns for Southwest Dekalb.

Georgia High School Football 

Stockbridge (3-0) for the second consecutive week allowed their opponent to score on their opening possession and for the second consecutive week after that they did not allow their opponents to score again. Dutchtown (2-1) jumped out a 7-0 lead after Shanaan McKoy’s short touchdown run capped the Bulldogs opening drive. Stockbridge pulled to within 7-6 after a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown by Demaje Carter. Marquez Ezzard added a touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the final 13-7 margin. Dutchtown’s final drive ended with an interception to cap another stingy night of Stockbridge defense which has allowed only 14 points in three games this season. It was Stockbridge’s eight consecutive victory over county and region foe Dutchdown. Lovejoy (41.5), Dutchtown (41) and Mays (36.1) are all averaging 36-plus points in games this season when not including their game against Stockbridge in which all were held to single digits (Mays was shutout).

Grayson (3-0) defeated John Curtis (LA) (1-1) 22-9 on the strength of a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. Quarterback DJ Irons rushed for a touchdown then hooked up with Jalen Rivers an 21-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as the Rams overcame an early 9-3 deficit for the win. Grayson collected its second victory over an out-of-state opponent this season and have International School of Broward (FL) and Ramsay (AL) remaining on the schedule.  Grayson has won 17 consecutive games, including two over Alabama power Hoover, since losing to IMG Academy (FL) in their 2016 season opener.

Colquitt County (4-0) shutout Roswell (1-2) 28-0 to win its third consecutive game. Ty Leggett rushed for two touchdowns in the second half while Nigel Hillery rushed for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Dacula (1-2) picked up its first win of the season by snapping  Arabia Mountain’s three-game win streak with a 9-0 shutout victory. Jalen Perry rushed for the lone touchdown of the game and Zachary Gerts connected on field goal for Dacula. Arabia Mountain (3-1) had a short touchdown run called back for holding in the first half and missed a field goal in the second half.

North Gwinnett has won three in a row since losing its season opener to Walton

North Gwinnett (3-1) won their third straight game defeating Norcross (2-2) 35-14. North Gwinnett’s Tyler Goodson rushed for over 240 yards and three touchdowns. Jimmy Urzua, who took over as quarterback for injured starter Cade Fortin in the first quarter of the Milton game, has led the Bulldogs to all three victories. Urzua and Devin Crosby each rushed for touchdowns as North Gwinnett amassed over 330 yards rushing as a team.

New Manchester (2-1) shutout Creekside 23-0. AJ Taylor rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns while Eddie Ellis caught a touchdown for New Manchester. Creekside (0-3) has been been shutout in all three games being outscored 89-0.

Woodstock (2-1) became the fourth Georgia team to score 70-plus points this season in their 77-49 shootout victory over Kennesaw Mountain (2-1). Rockdale County (75 vs Berkmar), Habersham Central (72 vs East Hall) and Mountain View (71 vs Osborne) are the others.

Jenkins (3-0) defeated Liberty County (1-2) 43-41; Jenkins quarterback Javonte Middleton passed for three touchdowns.

Class 7A Tift (4-0) handed former region foe and defending 6A state champion Valdosta (1-3) its second straight loss with a  20-10 victory

Abbeville (SC) defeated Lincoln County (1-2) 28-24

Cedar Grove (3-0) shutout Columbia (1-2) 33-0

Peachtree Ridge (0-3) struggles to begin the season continued after losing 47-28 to Newton (3-0).

McEachern earned its first victory of the season with a win over Jonesboro

McEachern (1-2) defeated Jonesboro (2-1) 49-10

Douglas County (3-0) won it’s region opener on the road shutting out Northgate (2-1) 21-0

Hapeville Charter (3-1) shutout Wesleyan (3-1) 35-0

Georgia HSFB Notes Week 1; Other Scores

The High School football season cranked up with a full schedule in Georgia on the final Friday in September. Here are some notes and scores from around the state.

In a battle of state champions from the highest class in Georgia (Grayson) and Alabama (Hoover), host Grayson jumped out a 14-0 lead and held on late for a 35-26 victory over the Buccaneers. Hoover (0-1) pulled to within two points, 28-26 on Larry McCammon’s third rushing touchdown with just over seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Grayson answered quickly when DJ Irons hooked up with Keynon Jackson for 71-yard touchdown pass to give Grayson (1-0) the 35-26 cushion which they held for the victory. Ronald Thompkins rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns while DJ Irons passed for 200 yards and touchdown and rushed for a touchdown. Hoover falls to 2-4 all-time against Georgia opponents and 0-2 all-time to Grayson.

High School Football

In Moultrie, GA the Colquitt County (2-0) Packers won their second straight game with a 26-7 victory over Vista Murrieta (CA). Daijun Edwards rushed for two touchdowns, Cam Singletary scored on a 46-yard touchdown reception and the Colquitt County defense held their second straight opponent under 150 yards of total offense. It was the Packers first-ever game against a team from California.

Lowndes (2-0) shutout its second opponent in a row with a 56-0 victory over International School Of Broward (FL). The Vikings have outscored their first two opponents 111-0 to open the season including a 45-0 victory over rival Valdosta in the season opener. Valdosta (1-1) defeated Woodland-Stockbridge (1-1) 26-0 to earn it’s first victory of the season while handing the Wolfpack it’s first loss.

Walton (2-0) under first-year head coach Daniel Brunner withstood Brookwood (0-2) 42-35. DJ Soyoye rushed for three touchdowns, quarterback Austin Kirksey passed for over 260 yards with a touchdown while highly-touted receiver Dominick Blaylock caught a touchdown pass for Walton. Brookwood was powered again by its rushing attack from Matthew Hill (rushing and receiving TD) and Dante Black (3 rushing TDs).

Defending 5A state champion Rome (1-0) defeated 6A Harrison (0-1) 33-21. Rome score the final 16 points of the contest after Harrison scored 14 unanswered points to take a 21-17 lead in the second half after trailing 17-7. Knox Kadum passed for a pair of touchdowns- both to Xavier Roberts, while Jamious Griffin rushed for a touchdown and defensive lineman JaQuon Griffin returned a fumble for a touchdown. Highly-touted Harrison quarterback Justin Fields passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another while finishing with over 300 yards of total offense.

Clarke Central (1-1) rebounded from a season opening loss to Winder-Barrow by defeating Oconee County (0-1) 27-11. Leading 14-3 in the third quarter, Jonathan Sewell caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Jack Mangel. Kapres Forbes put the game away by returning a punt 51 yards for a touchdown giving Clarke Central a 27-3 lead later in the third quarter. Mangel and Nadarrius Smith each had rushing touchdowns against the Warriors.

Stockbridge (1-0) used a Gabe McKensize touchdown run, a short field goal and a stout defense to defeat Mays (0-1) 9-0 for the second consecutive season. It marked the first time Mays was shutout in 64 games.

Mill Creek (2-0) scored 31 unanswered points enroute to a 31-13 victory over class 6A Stephenson (0-2). The Hawks, who overcame a deficit for the second consecutive week (defeated McEachern in season opener after trailing), rushed for over 200 yards and four touchdowns as a team.

Cartersville (2-0) won their 32nd consecutive game with a 52-45 victory over Bartram Trail (FL) (0-1). Rico Frye rushed for a one-yard touchdown with just over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to break a 45-45 tie and give Cartersville the 52-45 lead. Bartram Trail moved to the Cartersville 11 yard line after a pass interference call in the end zone however on the next play Riley Smith’s pass was incomplete as time expired. Cartersville’s highly-touted quarterback Trevor Lawrence passed for over 400 yards with three touchdowns while Rico Frye rushed for over 125 yards and two touchdowns. Bartram Trail rotated Smith and Gatewood at quarterback most of the day. Gatewood passed for over 160 yards and a touchdown while rushing for over 115 yards.

Cedar Shoals (1-0) overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Discovery (0-2) for the second consecutive season 22-12. Trailing 12-7, Cedar Shoals’ Cameron Hudson returned a lateral for a touchdown for a 15-12 lead after a successful two-point conversion. The Jaguars sealed the deal with a 19-play drive capped by a Jephari Colbert 7-yard touchdown with just more than three minutes remaining in the game. Colbert rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns for the Jaguars.

Tucker (2-0) defeated Lakeside-Dekalb (0-2) 54-0; Tucker travels to Colquitt County this week.

Cedar Grove (2-0) defeated Southwest Dekalb (1-1) 37-7

Valdosta (1-1) defeated Woodland-Stockbridge (1-1) 26-0; Woodland-Stockbridge travels to Tri-Cities this Saturday

Georgia HSFB Update Sept. 16th

Oconee County (4-0) won its fourth straight game with a 28-10 victory over previously undefeated Cedar Shoals (3-1). Sam Middlebrooks hit Roques Dowty on a 52-yard touchdown pass on the Warriors opening possession for a 7-0 lead which held to halftime. Trent Harris got Cedar Shoals on the board in the third quarter with a field goal to pull the Jaguars to within 7-3. In the fourth quarter Oconee County put the game away with touchdown runs from Champ Hall, Jared Hood and Christian Casey. Jaivanni McDavid returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown for the Jaguars only touchdown of the game. Cedar Shoals’ three-game win streak, it’s longest since 2007, was snapped with the loss.

Camden County (1-3) won its first game of the season getting a 7-6 decision over Brunswick (2-2). Mickey Packard scored for Camden County while Brunswick quarterback Jamarius Stevens scored for the Pirates. Stevens missed the PAT to leave the score 7-6 which held for the final margin.  Former Camden County Wildcat running back Brandon McMaster- now at Brunswick, finished with over 100 all-purpose yards for the Pirates against his former mates. Brunswick’s two losses have came by a combined two points-both off missed extra points.

Greater Atlanta Christian broke open a 9-7 halftime game in the third quarter with two touchdown passes from quarterback Davis Mills to Harrison Sloan and Trey Morrison. Mills finished with three touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown as GAC (3-1) defeated St. Pius (0-4) 37-7.

Lovejoy QB John Seter (17) attempts a pass against Stockbridge

Lovejoy (2-3) improved to 2-0 in region play with a 28-27 victory over Stephenson (1-3). Lovejoy quarterback John Seter- a transfer from The Salisbury School in Salisbury, Connecticut, was 15-of-24 for 301 yards, three touchdowns with one interception passing. Through five games (four games played) Seter has passed for 933 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions.

Grayson (2-1) defeated Deerfield Beach (FL) (1-2) 39-14. DeAngelo Gibbs caught two touchdown passes and Jamyest Williams returned an interception for a touchdown in the Rams second straight victory. Grayson is now 1-1 in interstate games this season with interstate games against Ramsay (AL) and Hoover (AL) remaining this season.

Quarterback Patrick Ferris passed for three touchdowns and Tyray Devezin rushed for another as Etowah (4-1) defeated Milton (2-2) 28-10. Blake Jones continued his stellar play with two touchdown receptions. Jones had interceptions in the previous two games against Spartanburg (SC) and East Coweta late in the fourth quarter to seal Etowah victories. Jackson Sisk also caught a touchdown pass for Etowah.

 

Other Games Of Interest: 

Mays (3-1) routed New Manchester (0-4) 51-0 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Raiders have won three consecutive games and the lone loss to Stockbridge, was by one point.

Colquitt County (1-4) won its first game of the season 52-14 over Brookwood (2-2). Colquitt chalked up its first-ever victory over Brookwood in the fourth all-time meeting in the series. Brookwood has lost two straight since opening the season with wins over North Gwinnett and Walton but have a favorable schedule upcoming in the next few weeks as region play opens. The Packers hit the road to face undefeated Valdosta (5-0) next.

Dwayne Davis picked his first victory as head coach of Mundy’s Mill (1-3) with a 33-13 victory over M.L. King (2-2).

Norcross defeated Archer 34-16 behind three touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown from quarterback Baron Radcliff. Tyler Ranel returned a kickoff 99 yard for a touchdown for Archer .

Lowndes (4-1) defeated Newton 42-34 for its fourth straight win. The Vikings have scored 35 or more points in all four victories this season after being held to only 13 points in the season opener against Valdosta (5-0)

Clarke Central (2-2) snapped its two-game losing streak with a 45-21 victory over North Oconee (0-4).  Jonathan Swelled rushed for over 175 yards and two touchdowns for the Gladiators. Clarke Central is at rival Cedar Shoals this Friday in the region opener for both.

Tucker (3-1) won its region opener  58-0 region over Jonesboro. Jonesboro (0-5) has only scored nine points through its first five games and have been outscored 149-0 the last three weeks against Spalding (3-1), McEachern (3-1) and Tucker. Jonesboro went 11-2 last season and have several transfers this season.

Northgate (4-0) defeated Creekside (3-1) in a 61-48 region game shootout. Both teams figure to fight with Mays (3-1), Douglas County (3-1), Alexander (3-0) and Langston Hughes (3-1) for playoff spots in the underrated yet extremely tough region 5-6A.

McEachern (3-1) scored a season-low six points in a 6-2 victory at Westlake (1-3). McEachern has not scored an offensive touchdown in two of its last three games against Grayson (scored touchdowns on punt and interception returns), Jonesboro (won 69-0) and Westlake (scored on two field goals). Westlake under first-year head coach Kareem Reid- who previously was a head coach in Florida, face Lithonia (1-3; defeated Meadowcreek for its first win this season last week) this Friday before opening region play against East Coweta (3-1) in two weeks. East Coweta’s lone loss came to North Cobb (3-1) who handed Etowah (3-1) its only loss this season so far 24-20.

 

 

 

 

Georgia High School Football Week 3 Update

The Mays Raiders (2-1) won their first game without former head coach Corey Jarvis 47-28 over region foe Langston Hughes (2-1). The Raiders jumped out to a 27-7 lead and never looked back defeating Hughes 47-28. It was the first game between the two schools as region opponents. Mays leads the all-time series 2-1.

The Cedar Shoals Jaguars improved to  3-0 for the first time to begin a season since 2007 with a 40-7 victory over North Oconee. Osiris Walker and Jerphari Colbert rushed for two touchdowns apiece while quarterback Akeem Glenn passed for touchdowns to Stavion Stevenson and Snipe Hall. The current three-game winning streak for Cedar Shoals is their first since 2013. Cedar Shoals hosts Oconee County next week before hosting Clarke Central in the 50th meeting of the two rival schools.

Kell jumped out to a 30-7 lead on Rome yet needed a 23-yard field goal from Connor Mendelson in the final minute to hold off Rome 33-30. Rome took a brief 7-0 lead in the first quarter before Kell ripped off 30 unanswered points. Josh Blancato kick return for a touchdown, John Lampley connected with Michael Luckie for a 29-yard touchdown pass and Kendall Bailey returned an interception for a touchdown putting Kell up 21-7 through a quarter of play. Lampley hooked up with Jared Hill for another touchdown and the Longhorns added a safety for a 30-7 halftime lead. In the Second half Rome came roaring back with a Tyrish Martin 27 pass from Knox Kadum to Tyrish Martin touchdown in the third quarter and two touchdown runs by Jamious Griffin. Griffin finished with three rushing touchdowns on the evening

Quarterback Davis Mills made a surprise start for Greater Atlanta Christian (2-1) for their cross country trip to face Valor Christian (CO). The Spartans fell 21-17 to Valor Christian (1-2) despite Mills’ surprise start. Mills suffered a non-disclosed, non-football related injury to his knee the day after a scrimmage game in mid-August and had been ruled out for 3-4 months. Mills finished 5-of-17 for 44 yards in the loss.

Glynn Academy (3-1) defeated Camden County 56-7 for its third consecutive victory. Camden County is 0-3 for the first time since 1988 (two wins were forfeited) and since 1969 in games with out forfeits. Camden will face Brunswick (2-1) next week. Former Camden County running back Brandon McMaster is now at Brunswick. McMaster rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns Friday as Brunswick defeated Wayne County 33-17.

Other games of interest:

Newton downed Peachtree Ridge in a thriller 34-32 at Sharp Stadium in Covington. Myron Middlebrooks passed for the game-winning touchdown in the final minute for Newton.

Blake Jones intercepted a pass in the final seconds to seal Etowah’s 28-20 victory over Newnan. It was the second week in a row Jones intercepted a pass to seal an Eagles victory.

Roswell (3-0) dropped Colquitt County to 0-4 with a 34-3 win, avenging last seasons loss in the Georgia 6A championship game.

Stephenson (1-2) picked up its first win of the season by handing Southwest Dekalb (2-2) its second straight loss 21-0. The Jaguars are still without head coach Ron Gartrell who is still recovering from hip surgery.

High School Football Update: Georgia

The Etowah (2-1) Eagles got a tremendous effort from its offensive line as running back Tyray Devezin rushed for over 200 yards and three touchdowns in a 21-14 victory over Spartanburg (SC). The Eagles scored 21 unanswered points after trialing 7-0. Etowah led 21-14 midway through the fourth period had a fourth down stop on the one yardline and a Blake Jones interception on the Vikings final two possession to seal the win. Safety/Tight End Stuart Head recorded and interception while linebacker Alan Michael Harris led Etowah in tackles. Ladarius Jones and Damyjai Foster each rushed for touchdowns for Spartanburg (2-1).

Will Van Pamelen  kicked the game-winning field goal from 20 yards to push Grayson (1-1) past McEachern (2-1) 16-13 as time expired. After a Kurt Turner touchdown run put Grayson ahead 7-0, McEachern’s Tyler Smith returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown to even the game at 7-all in the second quarter. Van Pamelen connected on the first of his three field goals to give the Rams a 10-7 halftime lead. The Indians took a 13-10 lead in the fourth quarter on another interception return when C.J. Miller raced 30 yards after picking off a ball that bounce off the chest of the intended receiver. Van Pamelen then tied the game at 13-all with a 28-yard field goal with 2:05 left before hitting the winner moments later. Bailey Hockman was a woeful 6-of-23 passing for 55 yards for the Indians.

Cedar Shoals (2-0) scored 29 unanswered points after trailing 17-6 to defeat Decatur 35-17. The Jaguars have won its first two games under first-year head coach Leroy Ryals and its first back-to-back wins since 2013. Osiris Walker rushed for two touchdowns and Tae Wright added a rushing touchdown for Cedar Shoals. Basketball players Snipe Hall and Javanni McDavid got in the scoring act for the Jaguars. Hall returned an interception for a touchdown while McDavid returned a punt for a touchdown for Cedar Shoals. Josh Creighton returned an interception for a touchdown and Brayton Reed rushed for a touchdown from one yard, which was set up by a 75-yard run by Terrill Hall for Decatur (1-1).

Armis Stokes scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 13 ticks left as Mays (1-1) defeated Peachtree Ridge on the road 36-31 after a fierce fourth quarter comeback. Peachtree Ridge led 31-21 with just over six minutes remaining in the game when Mays forced a safety and scored on a touchdown pass from B.J. Phillips to Kortez Daniel to pull within 31-29 after the failed two-point conversion. After forcing the Lions to punt, the Raiders used a fourth down conversion to keep the drive alive which Stokes capped with the touchdown run. Phillips passed for over 200 yards with two touchdowns while Stokes rushed for two touchdowns for Mays.

Other Games of Interest:

Westlake (1-1) handed Shiloh (1-2) its second straight loss 29-13. Westlake rebounded from a 10-9 setback to Langston Hughes in a game that was called in the third quarter last week. Shiloh lost it’s second straight game.

Tucker (2-1) defeated Colquitt County 21-20 as Colquitt County falls to 0-3 to begin the season. The last time Colquitt County was 0-3 was 2010, they lost to Brookwood in the state championship game. Tucker outscored Colquitt 18-3 in the second half after trailing 17-3 at halftime. Chris Broadwater was the leading rusher for Tucker with over 175 yards.

Gainesville (2-1) bettered Clarke Central (1-1) 21-14

Creekside (2-0) broke open a close game against Southwest Dekalb (2-1) and won 47-14

 

High School Football: Georgia

Grayson jumped out to a 7-0 lead over IMG Academy on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Chase Brice to Jamyest Williams early in the second quarter. From there it was all IMG Academy. Ascenders quarterback Kellen Bond rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another while Cooper Graham connected on two field goals as the Ascenders scored 26 unanswered points to win 26-7. Grayson committed three turnovers. IMG Academy had more penalty yardage.

Langston Hughes led Westlake 10-9 when the intra-classification and non-region game was called in the third quarter due to weather. Isaiah Green passed for a touchdown for Hughes. Trey Dixon rushed for a touchdown for Westlake.  No information was available on whether the game would be concluded at a later date.

Leroy Ryals won his first game as head coach at Cedar Shoals 42-6 over Discovery. Cedar Shoals (1-0) quarterback Akeem Glenn passed for four touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Stavion Stevenson and Altavious Wright each caught two touchdowns passes, Osiris Walker added a touchdown run, Trent Harris hit a field goal and the defense recorded two safeties. Cedar Shoals scored 40 or more points for the first time since 2011. The Jaguars travel to Decatur this week.

Etowah led North Cobb 20-17 after an Allen field goal in the fourth quarter. North Cobb (1-1)answered back with a touchdown by to go up 24-20 and eventually held on for that final score. Tyray Devezin scored on a 70-yard run for Etowah (1-1) who will host Spartanburg (SC) (2-0) next week. Spartanburg defeated T.L. Hanna 14-7 in overtime last week.

Other noteable games:

Tucker (1-1) raced out to a 35-3 halftime lead over Lakeside-Dekalb (1-1) and went on to win 48-10

Trailing 14-6 at halftime, backup quarterback Cori Pritchett replaced starter Xavier Dennis- who left with an injury late in the first half, in the second half to lead Redan (1-1) to its first win of the season 24-20 over Lithonia (0-2).

Glynn Academy knocked off Ware County 17-10

Southwest Dekalb (2-0) won its second consecutive game to open the season with a 21-20 come-from-behind victory over Cedar Grove (1-1) at Buck Godfrey Stadium. The Panthers Justin Tomlin connected with Michael Pace on a 20-yard touchdown pass and the extra point was successful with just over three minutes remaining to give Southwest Dekalb the victory.

Brookwood became the second straight opponent to score 40 or more points against Walton in their 40-13 victory. Brookwood (2-0) has posted 77 points through the first two games this season against North Gwinnett and Walton. Last season the Broncos scored 20 points in the first two games in losses to Mill Creek and Norcross. Walton (0-2) has been outscored 86-27 in two games this season.

Stockbridge (1-0) withstood Mays (0-1) 35-34 in the nightcap of the Inner City Classic at Lakewood Stadium. Mike Pierce returned an interception for a touchdown at the end of the first half to give Stockbridge a 14-13 halftime lead.. Tigers quarterback Kenderick Duncan rushed for a 15-yard touchdown with just over 2 two minutes remaining to give Stockbridge the 35-34 lead. Ryan Massey sealed the victory by intercepting Mays QB BJ Phillips with less than a minute remaining.

Venice (FL) handed Camden County its second consecutive loss 46-17. Camden County (0-2) will travel to Florida again next week to take on Columbia. Columbia defeated Gainesville (FL) 17-12 on Thursday.

Oconee County (1-0) handed David Perno his first loss at Clarke Central (1-1) 34-13.

Parkview (2-0) erased a 10-7 halftime margin to Shiloh (1-1) by outscoring the Generals 30-2 in the second half for the 37-12 victory.

Allatoona dropped to 0-2 on the season after a 21-13 loss to Alexander.

Venice (FL) handed Camden County its second consecutive loss 46-17. Camden County (0-2) will travel to Florida again next week to take on Columbia. Columbia defeated Gainesville (FL) 17-12 on Thursday.

 

 

 

 

High School Football Returns: Georgia

The 2016 regular season high school football kicked off around the southeast with a slate of games from Thursday night to the wee hours of Sunday morning in what has come to be known as Week Zero. Here is a look at some noteable games from the weekend.

In Georgia, two-time defending champion Colquitt County had its 30-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Mill Creek in a 34-27 defeat. It was Mill Creek’s first victory over the Packers in the all-time series (3-1 Colquitt leads) and in a stroke of irony it was a victory over the Hawks in 2014 that began the Packers 30-game streak. Mill Creek quarterback Cameron Turley connected with six different receivers while passing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. Colquitt’s Jake Saunders passed for over 300 yards, three touchdowns but had two key interceptions. Turley sealed the game with a 41-yard completion to Edmond Graham on third down with less than a minute remaining in the game. Mill Creek will host Stephenson (loss 34-23 to Cedar Grove) while Colquitt will host American Heritage Plantation (FL) this week.

Georgia High School Football Underway

Valdosta became the first high school program in the nation to win 900 games with its third straight win over Winnersville rival Lowndes 38-13. Valdosta scored two special teams touchdowns, returned an interception for a touchdown and running back Tevin Gray rushed for over 100 yards an d a touchdown in the victory. Lowndes quarterback Michael Barrett finished with a passing and rushing touchdown for the Vikings. Valdosta will host Woodland- Stockbridge (won 55-6 over Union Grove) while Lowndes will host Baytown-Palm Bay (FL) this week.

Xavier Mckinney returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and running back Sheldon Evans rushed for over 115 yards and a touchdown as Roswell defeated Buford 24-7. Roswell’s defense held Buford to less than 75 yards rushing and never allowed the Wolves to establish any momentum after a first quarter touchdown by Derrian Brown. Roswell will host Central Gwinnett in two weeks while Buford will take on Bishop Timon (NY) in Ireland in two weeks.

Throughout the summer Shiloh head coach Ryan Andrews talked confidently about the progression of his program entering his second season at the helm, namely the defense. It was that defense that stole the show in the opener by scoring three touchdowns in a 27-14 victory over Collins Hill earning the Generals their fourth straight victory dating back to last season.  Tyler Reese returned and interception for a touchdown while Greg Jones and Noah McInnis each returned fumbles for touchdowns. Shiloh will host Parkview (won 32-9 over Christ Presbyterian Academy, TN) this week while Collins Hill hosts Norcross (won 46-14 over Walton).

Other notes:
Creekside defeated Miami-Norland (FL) 9-7. Seminoles quarterback Khalil McClain rushed for a touchdown in the victory.

Langston Hughes received a strong effort from senior quarterback Isaiah Green in a 44-6 victory over Mundy’s Mill.

Clarke Central shutout Winder-Barrow 31-0 behind two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Jack Mangel. Zay Brown returned an interception for a touchdown for the Gladiators.

Southwest Dekalb defeated Redan 22-12 in its first game since the sudden death of head coach Michael Tanks. Tanks passed earlier in the month of complications from a stroke suffered at the beginning of fall camp. Retired educator Fletcher Salter was named Panthers interim head coach on August 12th. Salter coached under Tanks and legendary Panther coach Buck Godfrey in addition to coaching various sports at various schools in Dekalb County.

 

 

Undefeated Georgia 6A Semifinalist

Georgia is known for its deep and passionate high school football. That depth and passion will be taken to another level as all four 6A semifinalist have a combined 52-0 record.

Colquitt County (13-0) withstood a stout challenge from South Forsyth to advance with a 49-31 victory. Twice Colquitt scored 21 unanswered points, the last of which game when trailing 31-28 early in the fourth quarter. Colquitt’s Ty Lee and Keil Pollard each scored two touchdowns while South Forsyth’s  Jaylen Camp caught three touchdown passes. The win gave the Packers their 28th consecutive win.

The Packers will face Mill Creek (13-0) after the Hawks blanked Archer 23-0 on the strength of vicious defensive effort and solid placekicking. Mill Creek’s only offensive touchdown came on a Cameron Turley to Daniel Leconte 12-yard pass. Peyton Moore scored on a pick six while kicker Brenton King went 3-of-4 on fields goals. The victory put Mill Creek in the state semifinals for the first time in school history.

Colquitt County travels to north/metro Atlanta Georgia for the second straight week as Mill Creek will host. Colquitt County leads the all-time series 2-0. The teams met last season’s opener at McEachern High School with Colquitt County winning 31-14. The Packers defeated the Hawks 27-14 in the 2010 5A quarterfinals in Moultrie.

On the other side of the bracket Roswell (13-0) advanced past Collins Hill despite scoring a season-low 17 points in their 17-10 victory. Roswell quarterback Quintarius Neely engineered a 96-yard drive capped with his 17-yard touchdown to break a 10-10 tie. Neely also passed for a touchdown. Sheldon Evans rushed for over 150 yards for the Hornets.

Grayson (13-0) came from behind to defeat Westlake 35-28 after a late interception by Matthew Greenway preserved the victory. Grayson’s Cameryn Brent rushed for over 260 yards and four touchdowns. Westlake quarterback Malik Willis amassed over 200 all-purpose yards passing for three touchdowns and rushing for another in defeat.

Grayson will host Roswell in the schools first-ever meeting.

Four teams with a combined 52-0 record speaks volumes about how tough each team is. The playoff path each took to reach the semifinals is easily one of the toughest in all of high school football from coast to coast.

All four teams entered the quarterfinals ranked in the latest National High School Football Top 100, all will remain ranked when the rankings are updated Monday. Colquitt County entered the quarterfinals No.4, Grayson No.9, Roswell No.11 and Mill Creek at No. 63. Mill Creek is certain to move up with its impressive shutout victory over previously fifteenth-ranked Archer.

UPDATED: MIll Creek moved up to No. 30 in the latest National High School Football Top 100. Colquitt, Grayson and Roswell all remained the same. Archer fell to No. 33.
