The Cedar Shoals Jaguars returned to action this week in the 15th annual Sweet South Classic in Madison, Ga after an 11-day break. Cedar Shoals defeated Lanier (7-6) and Stephenson (7-6) in the first two rounds to set up a rematch against host Morgan County.
Cedar Shoals defeated Morgan County exactly four weeks earlier this season 57-50 in Athens.
Phlandrous Fleming and Snipe Hall combined for 47 of Cedar’s 57 points in a 57-48 win over Morgan County in the championship game Friday night. Morgan County entered the contest ranked 6th in class 3A.
Phlandrous Fleming (Tournament MVP) averaged 23 points while Snipe Hall averaged 17 over the three-game tournament.
Cedar Shoals- ranked 5th in class 5A entering the week, improved to 12-2 and have won 8 straight games. The Jags return to action Wednesday against region foe Johnson (6-8) before hosting non-region foe Washington (4-10) next Saturday.
The Cedar Shoals Jaguars improved to 2-0 on the young basketball season with a 52-39 victory over class 7A Etowah (0-1) at the Jared Cook Tip-Off Classic at North Gwinnett High School.
Cedar Shoals set the tone early with is defense holding Etowah to four points in the first quarter.
Phlandrous Fleming finished with a game-high 17 points in the Jaguars wire-to-wire victory. AJ Jones put in 14 points while Jai’vanni McDavid tallied seven.
Etowah dropped its first game under former Buford head coach Allen Whitehart. Adrian Cohen and Julian Baldwin were held scoreless in the first half. Cohen finsihed with 10 points (all in 3rd quarter) while Baldwin managed four points.
Cedar Shoals will take on Oconee County (0-1) today in its second game of the Andy Landers Classic at North Oconee High School in Bogart, GA.
Taurean Taylor rushed 78 yards for a touchdown with just over seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to help Tucker (6-1; 2-0) defeat Lovejoy (4-4; 4-1) 29-26.
Carlos Ayala made a field goal with just over eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to push Mountain View (7-1; 3-1) past Collins Hill (2-6; 2-2) 24-21. Ayala made the game-winning field for the second straight week for the Bears.
Justin Hall rushed for the game-winning touchdown in the final minute of the fourth quarter as Alexander (7-0; 5-0) defeated Langston Hughes (6-2; 4-2) 23-19. Hall also caught a touchdown pass. Hughes kicker Fernando Sdelamora connected on four field goals (all of 25-plus yards) and Isaiah Green rushed for a touchdown for Hughes. Alexander remains tied with Mays for first place in Region 5-6A.

Colquitt County (4-4; 1-0) defeated Camden County (2-5; 0-1) 56-10
The much anticipated opening to Region 1-6A play did not disappoint. South Georgia again flexed it’s muscles.
Lee County (6-0; 1-0) defeated Houston County 55-29. The Trojans jumped out to an earlier 15-0 lead only to see Houston County (6-1; 0-1) roar back behind three touchdowns passes by Jake Fromm to take a 22-15 lead early in the second quarter. That would be it for the Bears on this night.
By the time the end of the third quarter came Lee County had ripped off 40 unanswered points, picked off Fromm three times and led 55-22. Houston County managed a window dressing touchdown in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
Lee County running back Mark Robinson lead a powerful ground attack by rushing for over 200 yards and three touchdowns. Â while Aubrey Solomon returned a fumble for a touchdown.
Fromm finished with four touchdown passes and four interceptions as Houston County finished with six turnovers on the night.
In the other region tilt Valdosta (6-1; 1-0) scored on a muffed punt and a Hunter Holt touchdown run while holding Northside-Warner Robins (6-1; 0-1) to a pair of field goals in a 14-6 victory. Northside had one final chance however an Antwon Kincade interception with less than two minutes remaining sealed the victory for Valdosta.
Westlake’s Trey Person returned a kickoff for a touchdown to stem the tide of East Coweta jumping out to a 14-0 early first quarter lead. AJ Terrell rushed for three touchdowns, and James Miller kicked a field goal in the final six minutes as Westlake (3-3; 1-0) outlasted East Coweta (4-2; 0-1) 37-34.
Person also added a rushing touchdown for the Lions.
East Coweta quarterback Christian Reid rushed for a touchdown and passed for another while running back Devonte Ford rushed for a touchdown. Jonah Steerman returned an interception for a touchdown and Wyatt Palmer added a pair of field goals for the Indians in defeat.
Paris Brown scored on a 64-yard touchdown run with 4:30 left in the fourth quarter to give McEachern (5-1; 1-0) a tough 17-10 come-from-behind win over North Cobb (4-2; 0-1). Despite the recent offensive struggles, the victory was McEachern’s fourth in a row and third straight against North Cobb in the all-time series. Will Lovett connected with Drew Tejchman on a 16-yard touchdown pass for North Cobb’s lone touchdown of the contest.
Stockbridge (6-0; 4-0) down Woodland-Stockbridge (5-2; 4-1) in the biggest game between two Henry County teams in recent memory 26-10. Jalen Holston, Jordan Brown and Kenderick Duncan rushed for touchdowns for while Brenton Cox returned a fumble for a touchdown for Stockbridge. Woodland recovered a fumble for a touchdown and Tommy Herman made a 28-yard field for their only points.
Etowah’s Stuart Head took a fake punt 60 yards for a touchdown to even the score 7-7 with Woodstock, which held to half time. After recess Woodstock (4-2; 1-0) outscored Etowah 28-0 to win 35-7 handing Etowah (4-3; 0-2) its second loss in the last three games.

Mays routed Douglas County 55-0 to remain in first place in region 5-6A. The Raiders lone loss was a 35-34 setback in the season opener to class 5A title contender Stockbridge.
Mill Creek shutout Discovery 62-0.
Loganville withstood Clarke Central 43-37 in overtime. Loganville lead 37-15 in the fourth quarter before Clarke Central forced overtime with a Jack Mangel touchdown run and a pair of Mangel to Rico Arnold touchdown passes.
Parkview navigated a pesky Lakeside-Dekalb team early before rolling to a 63-30 victory. Lakeside-Dekalb, the lone Dekalb County team in region 7-7A, is seeking to make the state playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1996 and 1997 seasons. Caleb Mitchell passed for seven touchdowns for Parkview. Demonte Pressley returned a kickoff for a touchdown for Lakeside-Dekalb.
Lincoln County defeated Hancock Central 34-20 for its second straight region win this season.
Grayson won for the fifth straight time since a season-opening loss to IMG Academy (FL) by handing Shiloh its fifth straight loss 70-6. The Generals have not won since a season-opening win over Collins Hill and faced Grayson coming off a rare double week bye.
Mother nature effects us all whenever she wants and so with Hurricane Matthew bearing down on the eastern coasts of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, a number high school football games where bumped up to Thursday.
South Carolina had a pair of region 3-5A games moved up to Thursday and both lived up to the expected billing even if they were played a day earlier.
Host Byrnes (1-6; 0-2) took a 28-17 lead early in the third quarter on a Rahjai Harris seven-yard touchdown run after recovering an onside kick to begin the half. From there Boiling Springs (6-1; 1-1) ripped off 25 unanswered points to defeat Byrnes for the first time since 1998 (also at Nixon Field).
Donavan Anderson broke a 28-28 tie in the fourth quarter returning an interception 42 yards for a touchdown with just under five minutes left. The Bulldogs sealed the victory when KJ Rogers raced 42 yards for a touchdown with just over a minute remaining for the final 42-28 margin.
Rogers finished with over 125 yards rushing and two touchdowns while quarterback Mason Streater passed for over 150 yards and had a rushing touchdown for Boiling Springs.
Brock Carroll finished with over 250 yards passing and two touchdowns passing while Quez Mays and Harris each rushed for a touchdown for Byrnes.
Byrnes will host non-region opponent Nation Ford (5-2) next week.Nation Ford fell 70-28 to Rock Hill (2-5) Thursday night.
Gaffney (5-2; 0-1) jumped out to a 21-0 lead on visiting Dorman (5-2; 2-0) as DJ Logan rushed for a touchdown, caught a touchdown and Tyshun Sarrat hooked up with Dennis Smith on a touchdown pass.
Dorman hit the comeback trail behind quarterback Jalen Fowler. Fowler accounted for seven touchdowns (six rushing, one passing) while passing for over 300 yards and rushing for over 60 yards.
Fowler gave Dorman its first lead (34-31) of the night on a 3-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter as the teams exchanged blows down to the very last play.
Gaffney went back in front 38-34 when Cameron Rice scored from fourteen yards out. Dorman answered with a 66-yard touchdown pass from Fowler to Chase Tinsley to go up 41-38.
Gaffney scored again with just over a minute remaining on Rice’s 9-yard run for the 45-41 lead.
Eli Buckley returned the ensuing kickoff into Gaffney territory then fumbled it only to have teammate Addison Wilkins scoop it up and take it to the Gaffney fifteen. Fowler scored from three yards out moments later to put the Cavaliers ahead 48-45 with less than thirty seconds left. Gaffney’s Hail Mary attempt was complete however Myell White was stopped inside the ten giving Dorman the victory.
Gaffney racked up 666 yards of total offense to Dorman’s 423. Sarrat finished with over 400 yards passing while Rice finished with over 140 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Gaffney.
Gaffney will face Boiling Springs while Dorman will host Spartanburg (5-2; 1-0) next week.
Spartanburg’s Coleman Rudolph recovered a block punt by Conner Shurgart for a touchdown for a 6-0 lead just before halftime. BJ Roseburgh capped the Vikings victory with a pick six touchdown in the fourth quarter to defeat Byrnes (1-5) 13-0. Byrnes was shutout for the first time since 2010 in a loss to Hoover, AL and did not score on four red zone opportunities. Â Spartanburg (5-2) will have a bye week this week before taking on Dorman. Byrnes will host Boiling Springs this Friday.
Jermani Green got Myrtle Beach off to a fine start returning the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. In the end it was Sessions closing the deal for the Seahawks as they withstood a furious rally from North Myrtle Beach to win the battle of the undefeated teams 42-23. Trailing 29-7 in the third, North Mytrle Beach scored on three straight possessions on an AJ Gore touchdown, Â Andrew Smith field goal and touchdown run by Kered Class to pull within 29-23. Sessions then scored his third touchdown of the game from three yards out and Toronto King capped the scoring with a touchdown run moments later in the fourth quarter for Myrtle Beach.
Roswell (5-0) continued its impressive defensive play this season shutting out its second straight opponent with a 17-0 victory over Milton. The Hornets have not allowed more than seven points (Buford in season opener) in a game this season. Sheldon Evans rushed for two touchdowns for the Hornets.
Mill Creek (6-0) pulled away from North Gwinnett (3-3) late in the second quarter and posted its second straight victory over the Bulldogs 44-17. Cameron Turley passed for three touchdowns and Cole Wroble rushed for a pair of touchdowns for the Hawks
Lowndes (6-1) racked up over 600 yards of total offense to defeat Ware County 56-35. Ware County (2-3) jumped out to a 14-0 lead only to see the Vikings roar back with a strong third quarter and cruise to victory.
Nolan Donley hit Demond Ellison on a 40-yard touchdown pass with less than thirty seconds remaining as Cherokee (3-3) knocked off Etowah (4-2) 28-21. Etowah’s Tyray Devezin rushed for two touchdowns in the loss.
Norcross (6-0) defeated Parkview (3-2) in the battle of quarterbacks committed to play collegiate baseball. Norcross’ Byron Radcliff passed for three touchdowns as the Blue Devils defeated Parkview for the seventh time in the last eight meetings 38-15.
Trailing 14-13 with less than five minutes remaining, Daetrich Harrington raced 55 yards for a touchdown as Alexander (5-0) defeated Northgate 21-14. Kyle Cater rushed for a touchdown for Northgate in defeat.
Lovejoy (4-3) defeated Mt. Zion-Jonesboro (2-4) 35-9. Lovejoy QB John Seter passed for three touchdowns as the Wildcats improved to 4-0 in region play with a 35-9 victory.
Camden County (2-4) picked up its second win of the season by displacing Forest Park 67-14. Camden County scored more than 17 points in a game for the first time this season. Forest Park (0-7; one loss by forfeit) scored a season-high 14 points, cracking the double digit mark for the first time this season. Forest Park head coach Dale Myers is a native of Kingsland, GA and former Camden County player.In his second second, Myers has yet to pick up a victory as Forest Park is now 0-16 under Myers. Forest Park has not won more than three games since a seven-win season in 2000 and have had eleven head coaches during that span.
Preston Taylor nailed a 39-yard field goal with one second remaining to give Newton (4-1-1) a 13-12 victory over South Gwinnett (4-2). South Gwinnett took a 12-10 lead on a 34-yard field goal by Dawson Newman with less than a minute remaining. Blake Brok rushed for Newton’s lone touchdown.
Leading 20-0 in the third quarter, Shaun Jolly returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown as Stephenson (3-3) defeated Jonesboro (0-6) 27-0.
Tucker (5-1) defeated Mundy’s Mill (1-5) 34-14. Tucker quarterback Xavier Sheppard passed for a pair of touchdowns in the victory.
Isaiah Green passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two more as Langston Hughes (5-1) defeated Creekside 35-34. Creekside (4-2) scored with just over one minute remaining in the game however failed on the two-point conversion attempt.
Clarke Central (3-2) scored 38 unanswered points after trailing rival Cedar Shoals (3-2) 6-0 enroute to a 38-12 victory. The Gladiators have defeated the Jaguars eight straight times and lead the all-time series 35-15. Â Jack Mangel passed for two touchdowns to Rico Arnold and Trajan Pinkney while JaQuarus Grant returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown for the Gladiators. NaDerrious Smith and Jarvis Howell each rushed for a touchdown for Clarke Central.
North Gwinnett (3-2) used a balance attack to defeat Mountain View 38-14. Bulldog quarterback Cade Fortin passed for two touchdowns. Brian Eberhardt  and Ryan Lovelace rushed for touchdowns and Javonni Cunningham returned a punt for a touchdown for North Gwinnett.
Xavier Sheppard passed for three touchdowns and Joshua Vann caught two touchdown passes as Tucker (4-1) shutout M. L. King (2-3) 55-0.Tucker has scored 50+ points and recorded shutouts in two consecutive games.

Lakeside-Dekalb shutout Meadowcreek (0-5) 38-0. Lakeside recorded its first shutout this season and improves to 4-1 with its only loss to Tucker.
Malik Willis passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two touchdowns as Roswell shutout Archer 47-0
McEachern (4-1) held its third straight opponent without a touchdown in a 34-3 victory over Camden County (1-4).
Harrison (5-0) extended its winning streak to five games with a 43-19 victory over Allatoona (1-4).
Newton got by Heritage-Conyers 34-28. Newton head coach Terrence Banks served a one-game suspension  and did not coach in the game.
Total Sports Coverage will carry the 50th edition of the Classic City Championship LIVE between Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central on Friday September 23rd. Clarke Central leads the overall series 34-15 and have won the previous eight games and 10 of the 11 eleven. It will mark the region 8-5A opener for both schools.
Both schools are breaking in new coaches. Cedar Shoals has former Clarke Central and Thomasville head coach Leroy Ryals leading the Jaguars. Ryals posted a 7-1 record against Cedar Shoals as head coach of Clarke Central. The Gladiators are led by former University of Georgia baseball head coach David Perno, who won a state title in football at Clarke Central in the mid-80’s.
Currently Cedar Shoals is 3-1 and Clarke Central is 2-2.
Joel Hillsman will be on the play-by-play call. Hillsman, an Athens native, has broadcast high school sports across six states the last seven years, will be calling his third game in this storied Georgia series.
Oconee County (4-0) won its fourth straight game with a 28-10 victory over previously undefeated Cedar Shoals (3-1). Sam Middlebrooks hit Roques Dowty on a 52-yard touchdown pass on the Warriors opening possession for a 7-0 lead which held to halftime. Trent Harris got Cedar Shoals on the board in the third quarter with a field goal to pull the Jaguars to within 7-3. In the fourth quarter Oconee County put the game away with touchdown runs from Champ Hall, Jared Hood and Christian Casey. Jaivanni McDavid returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown for the Jaguars only touchdown of the game. Cedar Shoals’ three-game win streak, it’s longest since 2007, was snapped with the loss.
Camden County (1-3) won its first game of the season getting a 7-6 decision over Brunswick (2-2). Mickey Packard scored for Camden County while Brunswick quarterback Jamarius Stevens scored for the Pirates. Stevens missed the PAT to leave the score 7-6 which held for the final margin. Â Former Camden County Wildcat running back Brandon McMaster- now at Brunswick, finished with over 100 all-purpose yards for the Pirates against his former mates. Brunswick’s two losses have came by a combined two points-both off missed extra points.
Greater Atlanta Christian broke open a 9-7 halftime game in the third quarter with two touchdown passes from quarterback Davis Mills to Harrison Sloan and Trey Morrison. Mills finished with three touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown as GAC (3-1) defeated St. Pius (0-4) 37-7.
Lovejoy QB John Seter (17) attempts a pass against Stockbridge
Lovejoy (2-3) improved to 2-0 in region play with a 28-27 victory over Stephenson (1-3). Lovejoy quarterback John Seter- a transfer from The Salisbury School in Salisbury, Connecticut, was 15-of-24 for 301 yards, three touchdowns with one interception passing. Through five games (four games played) Seter has passed for 933 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions.
Grayson (2-1) defeated Deerfield Beach (FL) (1-2) 39-14. DeAngelo Gibbs caught two touchdown passes and Jamyest Williams returned an interception for a touchdown in the Rams second straight victory. Grayson is now 1-1 in interstate games this season with interstate games against Ramsay (AL) and Hoover (AL) remaining this season.
Quarterback Patrick Ferris passed for three touchdowns and Tyray Devezin rushed for another as Etowah (4-1) defeated Milton (2-2) 28-10. Blake Jones continued his stellar play with two touchdown receptions. Jones had interceptions in the previous two games against Spartanburg (SC) and East Coweta late in the fourth quarter to seal Etowah victories. Jackson Sisk also caught a touchdown pass for Etowah.

Mays (3-1) routed New Manchester (0-4) 51-0 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Raiders have won three consecutive games and the lone loss to Stockbridge, was by one point.
Colquitt County (1-4) won its first game of the season 52-14 over Brookwood (2-2). Colquitt chalked up its first-ever victory over Brookwood in the fourth all-time meeting in the series. Brookwood has lost two straight since opening the season with wins over North Gwinnett and Walton but have a favorable schedule upcoming in the next few weeks as region play opens. The Packers hit the road to face undefeated Valdosta (5-0) next.
Dwayne Davis picked his first victory as head coach of Mundy’s Mill (1-3) with a 33-13 victory over M.L. King (2-2).
Norcross defeated Archer 34-16 behind three touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown from quarterback Baron Radcliff. Tyler Ranel returned a kickoff 99 yard for a touchdown for Archer .
Lowndes (4-1) defeated Newton 42-34 for its fourth straight win. The Vikings have scored 35 or more points in all four victories this season after being held to only 13 points in the season opener against Valdosta (5-0)
Clarke Central (2-2) snapped its two-game losing streak with a 45-21 victory over North Oconee (0-4). Â Jonathan Swelled rushed for over 175 yards and two touchdowns for the Gladiators. Clarke Central is at rival Cedar Shoals this Friday in the region opener for both.
Tucker (3-1) won its region opener  58-0 region over Jonesboro. Jonesboro (0-5) has only scored nine points through its first five games and have been outscored 149-0 the last three weeks against Spalding (3-1), McEachern (3-1) and Tucker. Jonesboro went 11-2 last season and have several transfers this season.
Northgate (4-0) defeated Creekside (3-1) in a 61-48 region game shootout. Both teams figure to fight with Mays (3-1), Douglas County (3-1), Alexander (3-0) and Langston Hughes (3-1) for playoff spots in the underrated yet extremely tough region 5-6A.
McEachern (3-1) scored a season-low six points in a 6-2 victory at Westlake (1-3). McEachern has not scored an offensive touchdown in two of its last three games against Grayson (scored touchdowns on punt and interception returns), Jonesboro (won 69-0) and Westlake (scored on two field goals). Westlake under first-year head coach Kareem Reid- who previously was a head coach in Florida, face Lithonia (1-3; defeated Meadowcreek for its first win this season last week) this Friday before opening region play against East Coweta (3-1) in two weeks. East Coweta’s lone loss came to North Cobb (3-1) who handed Etowah (3-1) its only loss this season so far 24-20.
