Phoenix Lose Regular Season Finale

The Atlanta Phoenix (6-2) had their two game winning streak snapped in the regular season finale to the defending WFA Champion D.C. Divas (5-3).

Atlanta entered the game averaging 50.2 points per game including scoring 70 against the South Carolina Smash earlier this season but were shutout for the first time this season. D.C. scored touchdowns on its first two possessions for a 14-0 lead.

Play was halted in the second quarter due to a brief lightning delay. When play resumed the Divas tacked on another touchdown to go up 21-0 and that score held until halftime.

In the second half D.C added two more touchdowns including a pick six by Dana Blakely for the final score of 34-0. Divas quarterback Amanda Congialdi passed for two touchdowns in the victory.

Despite the loss Atlanta qualifies for the WFA (Women’s Football Alliance) Division I playoffs.

Atlanta Phoenix Headed To WFA Playoffs

The Atlanta Phoenix professional women’s football team won their 2016 season finale 50-0 over the Fayetteville Fierce (2-4), sweeping the season series and winners of two of their last three games entering the playoffs.

The Phoenix jumped out to a 23-0 lead in the first three minutes of the first quarter with a touchdown run by Brittney Smith, a pick six by Paige Covington, a touchdown pass from Ranee Langiais to Chavala Jones and a safety on a kickoff return.

Langiais and Jones hooked up again later followed by a Dana Green touchdown run to lead 37-0 putting the game out of reach early in the second quarter.

Atlanta (5-3) played in the Women’s Football Alliance’s Southeast Region-North Atlantic Division in 2016 finishing second behind the Alabama Fire (7-1). The Phoenix and Fire split their two regular season meetings.

Atlanta will travel to the Pittsburgh Passion (6-2) to open the playoffs Saturday June 11th. Pittsburgh won the Northeast Region- North Central Division, went 3-1 at home, 3-2 in non-division games and allowed only 15.2 points-per-game with a pair of shutouts this season but enter the playoffs losing two of their last three games.

Despite averaging 35 points-per-game this season, the Phoenix only averaged 13 points-per-game in losses this season. Defensively the Phoenix posted three shutouts and allowed 20 or more points three times twice (Alabama Fire and D.C. Divas). Atlanta allowed 34.3 points-per-games in losses yielding a season-high 52 to D.C. (7-1) this season.

 

 

DC Divas Send Atlanta Phoenix Packing

The DC Divas (10-0) advanced to the National Conference Finals of the WFA with a 40-6 victory over the Atlanta Phoenix. It was the second straight romp of the season for the Divas over the Phoenix after winning in the regular season 54-0.

The loss snapped Atlanta’s three-game winning streak as they finish the season 6-4 and were the Southeast Region Champions.

Atlanta trailed 34-0 in the third quarter before getting their only score of the contest on a 40-yard touchdown pass to make it 34-6 in the third quarter. The Divas added another their only score of the second half later in the third quarter to seal the victory.

Atlanta Phoenix Win 48-9 Over Jacksonville In Playoffs

The Atlanta Phoenix Women’s Professional Football won its opening playoff game in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) defeating the Jacksonville Dixie Blues 48-9 Saturday. All-American fullback Dana Green scored two touchdowns including this long touchdown run in the second half that busted open what had been a close game at halftime with Atlanta leading 12-9.

It was the third meeting of the season between the two teams. They split both regular season meetings as each won on the others home field, Jacksonville won 24-10 in week 2 while Atlanta won 13-6 in the regular season finale. With the win the Atlanta Phoenix win their second straight Southeast Region Championship

During the regular season the Atlanta (6-3) averaged 22.1 points while allowing 17.8 points against in 7 regular season games played (they were awarded a forfeit victory over Orlando in week 3). Their lone shutout came in a 66-0 win over  the Daytona Wave Runners. The most points they allowed in a game was 54 to the DC Divas (9-0) in a 54-0 loss.

The Phoenix will hit the field again on July 11th in the National Conference semifinals against the DC Divas in Washington.

Miami Fury Eliminate Atlanta Phoenix

The Miami Fury scored a late first half touchdown, added a second half field goal, and held off a late threat to defeat the Atlanta Phoenix 9-7 in the second round of the Women’s Football Alliance playoffs. Miami avenged their 12-8 regular season loss to the Phoenix.

The Phoenix complete their second season 7-3 and were the Southeast Division champions. Atlanta defeated the Tampa Bay Inferno last week in Tampa 15-7. The Inferno were the South Atlantic division champions.

Miami improves to 7-2 and will face the Chicago Force in the quarterfinals on July 5th in Chicago. Chicago defeated the Western Michigan Mayhem 66-0 in the second round.
