Langston Hughes Moves Into First Place In Region 3-6A

The Langston Hughes Panthers won their third straight contest defeating previously undefeated East Coweta 29-21 Friday night.

Isaiah Green capped an 80-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run on the Panthers opening second half possession. Green then hit Rashad Burch for a 24-yard touchdown pass to cap a 53-yard drive followed by a 31-yard touchdown run by Demetrius Whitmore early in the fourth quarter to put the Panthers up 29-7.

Whitmore finished with two rushing touchdowns.

East Coweta would attempt to rally behind sophomore backup quarterback Christian Reid. Reid entered the game midway through the fourth quarter when starting quarterback Will LaGuardia was sacked by Jac’quez Walker and suffered a head injury, LaGuardia would not return. Langston Hughes was assessed a personal foul on the play and two plays later after another personal foul on Hughes, Reid raced untouched 28 yards for a touchdown to pull East Coweta closer at 29-14.

The Indians would force Langston Hughes into a three-and-out with 6:16 remaining but were unable to move the ball punting it back to Langston Hughes with just over fives minutes remaining. East Coweta would not close up shop however as they forced the Panthers to punt again and this time capped their drive with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Reid to Justin Crump for the final 29-21 margin.

Whitmore scored on a 2-yard touchdown run after a Jeffery Allison interception set up Langston Hughes with a first-and-goal from the East Coweta seven. Whitmore scored two plays later with less than two minutes gone by in the opening quarter. East Coweta evened the game on a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Will LaGuardia with less than four minutes remaining in the second quarter. Each team failed on field goals attempts, Langston Hughes due to a bad snap while East Coweta’s attempt fell just short of the crossbar as time expired in the first half.

Langston Hughes (3-3; 3-0) took sole possession of first place in region 3-6A and are the only undefeated team in region play after Westlake defeated Newnan 41-21. Langston Hughes Wins Region 3-6A Opener

Langston Hughes and Douglas County each were looking for its first win of the season in the region opener for both on a misty first Friday night of the fall.

Junior quarterback Isaiah Green got it started right off the bat leading Langston Hughes down the field 66 yards in five plays on their opening possession capping it with an 11-yard touchdown pass to DeShawn Ross giving the Panthers a 7-0 lead with 8:29 left in the opening quarter.

Douglas County would get on the board early in the second quarter by cashing in on a Langston Hughes turnover. DJ Avery powered in for a yard out capping a 15-play drive that began in the first quarter tying the contest 7-all with 10:22 in the second quarter.

The game would change later in the second quarter when Douglas County was forced to punt. Langston Hughes’ Rashad Burch juggled the catch at the Panthers 20, three Douglas County players failed to tackle him leading to Burch racing 80 yards for the touchdown putting the Panthers ahead 14-7 lead with 2:56 left in the half which held through halftime.

Langston Hughes (1-3; 1-0 Region 3-6A) would not let up as Aaron Finch intercepted Douglas County’s Malik Oliver on the first play of the third quarter, returning it to 55 yards to the Tigers eight. After a pair of penalties, Hughes was first and goal from the twenty-two, Green hit Burch in the left corner for a 22-yard touchdown pass and a 21-7 lead. Burch was not finished. After the Panthers forced a Douglas County punt on the next possession, Burch returned the punt 27 yards to the Tigers 19, two plays later it was Green to Burch for a 20-yard touchdown pass making it 28-7 with 7:29 remaining in the third quarter.

Douglas County (0-4; 0-1 Region 3-6A) cut the lead in half on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Oliver to Cauthen to make it 28-14 with 9:30 remaining in the fourth quarter.  The Tigers would have more than one opportunity to pull closer and make a game of it. After forcing a punt the Tigers were turned over on downs at their own 45. One play later, John Brown intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 13 yards to the Panthers 37 however the Tigers were unable to cash it n as they were turned over on downs again, this time on the Panthers ten to seal the game.

Green finished 15-21 192 yards three touchdowns and one interception. Burch finished with 131 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns (two receiving and one punt return). Jeffrey Allison, Keyshaun Clark and Joshua Brown led a Panthers defense that allowed only less than 200 yards of total offense to Douglas County.  Freshmen Dequavious Parker and Charles Thomas showed why they are on the starting defensive unit with outstanding play all evening.

Langston Hughes will travel to Campbell-Smyrna (2-2; 0-1) next week while Douglas County will travel to Newnan (3-1; 1-0).

Westlake Defense Secures Key Region Win

Entering the contest the Westlake Lions defense had not yeiled more than 14 points in a game to an opponent while averaging only 5.5 point per game against. That total rose slightly to 5.57 as they held rival Langston Hughes to six in a 14-6 victory- thanks to the defense.

With less than a minute remaining, down by one Langston Hughes was on the move behind sophomore quarterback Isaiah Green. After a completion to Montravious Atkinson for 14 yards for a first down, Green scanned the field and fired down the middle complete to…Nigel Warrior of Westlake. Warrior returned the interception 65 yards for a touchdown to seal Westlake’s 14-6 win over Langston Hughes. Warrior record two interceptions on the day.

Westlake struck first on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Dakota Rocker to Marquez Louder with 1:21 left in the first quarter. 7-0 Westlake, that score held until halftime.

On their second possession of the third quarter, Langston Hughes marched 53-yards in 5 plays to pull within 7-6 on a 41-yard touchdown toss from Green to Kenyan Houston with 6:53 remaining in the quarter, the extra point sailed wide left and was no good.

In between the scores, Westlake and Langston Hughes defenses fought to keep the other squads offense off the board, each did.

In the end it was the No.1 defense in Georgia 6A by points-per-game average sealing the deal with Nigel Warrior’s pick six. Warrior-the son of former NFL star Dale Carter, is a highly touted recruit with multiple offers from Power 5 conference schools.

Westlake (6-1; 5-0) is in control of Region 3-6A and will win the region barring things that cannot be made up. Langston Hughes falls to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the region and should be the No.2 seed out of that region. The Lions will host South Cobb (4-4;3-2) Saturday at 2pm at Westlake High School.

Westlake earned the most wins in a season under second year head coach Bryan Love. In 2013 Westlake went 5-5 in the regular season, finishing 5-6 after a first round exit on the road to Camden County.

Langston Hughes will travel to Pebblebrook (2-6; 0-5) Friday night.
