Southern Football League To Go Without 2012 Champion?

The Southern Football League is unlikely to crown a champion for the first time in almost 15 years. “The SFL” as it is commonly known was founded in 1980 and did not compete this season. As of right now we have not been informed if a 2012 Southern Football League Championship game will be held as there was not a 2012 Southern Football League regular season.

Commissioner Michael Frazier could not be reached for comment but when new information is available we will let you know.

Here are the most recent Southern Football League Champions… 2011- Georgia Xtreme, 2010- Georgia Jets, 2009- Forest Park Vikings

GDFL Releases Playoff Bracket

2012 GDFL Playoff bracket

The 2012 GDFL playoffs are around the corner and with that all playoff spots have been locked down so the GDFL has released the official 2012 GDFL Playoff bracket. The championship game will be played at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL October 13th .

The Central Penn Piranha have been ranked No.1 most of the season and are the favorites to win the fourth ever championship in the leagues history. Naturally the Piranha are favored to win the Northern Elite bracket but could face the defending GDFL champion Chambersburg Cardinals in the third round along the way. The Piranha defeated the Cardinals in their only meeting this season.

The South Georgia Sting, Greenville Seminoles and the Carolina Venom are the favorites out of the Southern Elite bracket. This is easily the toughest bracket out of the four in the GDFL playoffs. This bracket also features a team from H.O.T.S (Heart of the South). The GDFL entered into a partnership with the H.O.T.S. at the beginning of season.

The South Buffalo Celtics are the favorite out of the Northern Empire bracket however despite having to play in a wild card game the Christian County Outlaws remain a threat out of that bracket as well.

The 2011 GDFL runner-up Oklahoma Thunder are faced with a wild card game int he opening round but the Oklahoma City Diamondbacks and Indianapolis Tornadoes will be the teams many are looking for to win the Southern Empire bracket. The Diamondbacks have beaten the Thunder twice this season accounting for the only losses by the Thunder.

The playoffs will begin August 25th with the wildcard round. For more information on the GDFL and the GDFL Playoffs please visit gdfl.net

South Georgia Sting Finish Regular Season Undefeated, GDFL Playoffs Up Next.

The Georgia Sting have kept busy while being quiet on the scene. The squad formally known as the South Georgia Noles in 2011, are doing work for a second consecutive year. The Sting defeated the Florida Falcons 24-23 this past Saturday to cap an 8-0 season , their second in the GDFL.

The South Georgia Sting are Undefeated...again.

The Sting scored on plays by Blake Henderson, who hit Dominique Reid on a short route filled with YAC (Yards After Catch) resulting in a 67-yard TD reception, Darius Austell caught a 23-yard touchdown pass and the Sting capped it with a 7-yard Lanarius McKinley touchdown run. The Sting were 3-3 on two-point conversions in the victory.

The Sting clinched the 2012 Sunbelt Division Championship and are division champions for the second straight season in the GDFL. The GDFL playoffs begin August 25th and the Sting’s opponent has not be determined at this time.

Juwaan Williams Leads Tucker To Scrimmage Win Over Chattahoochee

After winning Class 4A state championships in 2008 and 2011, the defending State champion Tucker Tigers opened the 2012 season breaking in a number of things from a bump up in classification to Class 5A, a new head coach and young football team. Bryan Lamar, a Tucker alum, is now at the controls of the Tucker football program after former head coach Franklin Stephens left for Lamar County after the 2011 championship season.

Chattahoochee, who won the Class 4A state championship in 2010 defeating Starr’s Mill, entered tonight’s scrimmage against Tucker adjusting to some new things as well as they also were bumped up in classification for 4A from 6A.

Chattahoochee opened the scoring on a 1-yard TD run by C.J. Leggett for a 7-0 Cougars lead. On the Tucker’s next possession they fumbled it and Chattahoochee’s Brian Sykes picked it up racing 51 yards for another Cougars TD and a 13-7 lead after the extra point failed.

Tucker opened the second quarter by putting together a 70-plus yard drive capping it with an 11-yard TD run by quarterback Juwaan Williams cutting the Cougar lead to 13-7 with 5:52 left in the quarter. That was the only scoring drive in the quarter for either team so 13-7 it was at the break.

The second half began much like the first half ended, vanilla coverages and coaches not reaching too deep into the playbook. The squads exchanged possessions most of the quarter until Tucker drove it 83 yards quickly. Yusef Minor got the Tigers going late in the third quarter ripping off a 30-yard run that included flashes of his speed and power, to the Tucker 47. On the next play Williams hit Dominic Sanders for a 53-yard TD pass giving Tucker a 14-13 lead with 1:44 left in the third that stood for the final. The fourth quarter featured the JV squads getting some game experience playing out the game with a running clock.

“We played young and played inexperienced, we have a long way to go. We have a lot of new guys in there and we played like we had a lot of new guys in there’, Tucker head coach Bryan Lamar said.

Lamar added that they have a pretty decent junior class noting that they were inexperienced and he would be looking for leadership from a few key players.

“Our quarterback Juwaan Williams, he’s going to be a leader. He’s a guy that gets in there and works and he’s surrounded by some new guys and he’s got to continue to lead and continue to come and work everyday. Solomon Jackson is a two-way player, a senior, were depending on him to get it going for us on both sides of the ball, mainly those two guys are the guys that have to get it going for us”, Lamar added.

Jackson and junior Deitrick Dukes each recorded a sack and were in a number of plays for the Tiger defense most of the night.

Tucker opens the regular season in two weeks against Cedar Grove, a team led by highly rated quarterback Johnathan McCrary, at Hallford Stadium in Clarkston, Ga.
