The Cedar Shoals Jaguars 2017-18 boys basketball season came to an end after a 39-35 defeat to Hiram in the first round of the Georgia 5A state tournament.
It marked the end of the first losing season in five seasons and only the second losing season under head coach L’Dreco Thomas in his eight seasons. It was also the first time in four seasons the Jaguars did not advance to at least the semifinals.
Coming off a 2017 Class 5A runner-up finish the Jaguars played one of the more difficult schedules in the state even with an influx of sophomores headlining the roster. Cedar Shoals finished 10-18 this season. The highlight of the season was a 65-64 home victory over region foe Buford who had won the previous five meetings including the state championship game last year.
The youthful group posted a 3-8 record in games decided by five points or less, with three losses coming directly on buzzer beaters.
Rising juniors Quincy Canty and Tyler Johnson will be counted on heavily next season as the leaders of the team. Canty led the team in scoring and rebounding this season while Johnson was second in scoring while showing flashes of what he can be in the future.
