Jerrick Mitchell powered the Cedar Shoals Jaguars to their 16th straight win with a 65-48 opening round victory in the 5A state tournament over Hiram Tuesday night in Athens. Mitchell scored nine of his 19 points in the third quarter as Cedar Shoals turned a five-point game at halftime into a ten-point lead by the end of the third quarter 43-33. In the fourth quarter the Jaguars continued to grow its lead to as many as 17 for the final margin.
Mitchell finished just shy of a triple-double with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.
The teams exchanged the lead several times int he early going with Hiram up 9-8 before Cedar Shoals used a 6-0 run to take the lead for good and from there held Hiram at bay as the lead steadily grew the rest of the evening.
Stavion Stevenson finished with 14 points and led a total team defensive effort in slowing Hiram’s 6’7 Devon Brewer to only seven points on the night. Snipe Hall tallied 11 while Phlandrous Fleming chipped in nine for Cedar Shoals. Travonte White led Hiram with 12 points (on four three-pointers) while Allen Brown scored 11 for the Hornets.
Cedar Shoals (27-2) will host Mundy’s Mill Saturday in the round of sixteen. Mundy’s Mill defeated Northside-Columbus 58-42 to advance. Hiram completes its season below .500 at 11-19 and lost 18 of its last 24 games.
