A battle of top-10 teams came down to the wire as fifth-ranked Cedar Shoals knocked off seventh-ranked Heritage 54-51 Friday night in region 8-5A action. Heritage, now out of the rankings, jumped out 22-11 after the first quarter. Cedar Shoals went on to outscore Heritage 43-29 the rest of the way but never led until the fourth quarter where they held the Patriots to only five points in the quarter.
Snipe Hall led Cedar Shoals with 18 points, Jerrick Mitchell put in 10 points with 6 assists and Stavion Stevenson finished with 10 points and had two big blocks late in the victory.
The Jaguars hit the road the following day to earn their eighth straight win with a 57-47 defeat of Woodward Academy. Hall led the Jaguars again with 16 points and 4 assists, Jerrick Mitchell tallied 14 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists and Phal Fleming chipped in 11.
Cedar Shoals (19-2) remained ranked fifth in class 5A in the latest state rankings. Cedar Shoals is off until Saturday’s home date against crosstown and region rival Clarke Central (6-13). Cedar Shoals defeated Clarke Central 73-44 earlier this season at Clarke Central.
