The Cedar Shoals Jaguars (22-8) extended their winning streak to five games with a dramatic 57-56 win over Northside-Warner Robins in the second round of the state tournament.
Trailing 56-54 senior D’ andre Mahaffey nailed the go-ahead three-pointer with six seconds remaining to give the Jags the lead. Northside-Warner Robins (16-11) was unable to get a clean shot off as the horn sounded sending Turner-Neathery Gymnasium into hysteria.
Mahaffey finished with a game-high 22 points.
Cedar Shoals, the No.1 seed out of Region 8-5A, is into the quarterfinals for the first time since 2003 and have only advanced beyond the quarterfinals twice in school history. The Jaguars will host M.L. King in the quarterfinals next Wednesday night.
M.L. King (24-5) rallied from 15 down in the second have to defeat previously undefeated and class 5A No.1 McIntosh (29-1) 66-65. Juquan Jones finished with a game-high 35 points for M.L. King. The Lions have not played a home game this season after a fire destroyed their gym prior to the season starting so playing on the road is second nature.
