Sophomore quarterback Isaiah Green has been named the starting quarterback for Langston Hughes replacing the injured Kinan Humphrey. Green’s first career varsity start will be Friday August 29th at home against rival Creekside.
Green was ready when his number was called near the end of the second quarter in the season opener against Mays last Saturday. He showed poised in falling to complete a drive he began watching from the bench, without scoring as the Panthers trailed 7-6 at halftime.
He shook it off with a touchdown pass to Montavious Atkinson finishing a long drive on the opening possession of the second half. Later Green connected on a 33-yard pass to Rashard Burch setting up a short Joshua Brown touchdown run.
An Atkinson interception set up Green’s final touchdown pass of the day when he found Sean Nelson in the right corner as the Panthers won 27-7. By the end of the night Isaiah Green was 9-of-15 110 yards and two touchdowns in just over two quarters of work.
Humphrey has a partial tear in his ACL and could be ruled out for the season. He lead Langston Hughes to a 10-2 record and the second-round of the 6A playoffs last season. Humphrey- who plays defensive back as well- was 8-of-17 127 yards passing prior to the injury.
Green’s only previous action this season was a week earlier in a scrimmage against North Gwinnett. He capped a long scoring drive with a touchdown pass tying the scrimmage at 21-all at the end of the varsity portion.
