Class 5A Kell and Class 6A Marietta finally got a chance to get their scrimmage game in after it was postponed due to weather last Friday. Once they hit the field the game was filled with a multitude of long rushing touchdowns.
Kell’s Itabari Mason got the party started with a 40-yard touchdown run on Kell’s opening drive for a 7-0 lead.
Marietta scored 14 unanswered points on the legs of stud running back KirVonte’ Benson. Benson tied the game on a 60-yard gallop then gave the Blue Devils the lead 14-7 on a 40-yard touchdown run.
Ivan Walls raced in from 60 yards out for Kell tying the game at 14 and would stay that way until halftime.
In the third quarter the rushing touchdowns kept coming as Marietta’s Nakia Berniard broke several tackles on a 54-yard touchdown on Marietta’s opening second half possession giving the Blue Devils a 21-14 lead.
Kell would put back-to-back impressive drives together to score 14 unanswered points. Cameron Rosenthal connected with Bryan Grant off a deflected pass for a 20 yard touchdown capping an 8-play 75-yard drive. On their next possession Langley racked up 72 yards rushing on the drive capping it with an impressive 28-yard touchdown run to put the Longhorns in front 28-21 with 3:07 remaining.
“Obviously there were a lot of things that I saw that I was pleased with. We flew around some and were physical. We ran the ball well at times and other times we didn’t,’ Kell head coach Derek Cook said on his team’s effort.
Marietta’s all-state place kicker Ian Shannon added a 26-yard field goal as time expired in the third pulling the Blue Devils within four, 28-24. Neither team scored in the final frame as Kell won the scrimmage 28-24.
“I’m glad to see we’re in pretty decent good game shape. We didn’t have guys on the offensive and defensive line throwing up and that’s a good sign. Obviously the weather was cooler than normal,” Cook added. “In a lot of ways we’re an inexperienced team and were young and even with some of our seniors were inexperienced. We have to overcome that right we’re not going to use that as an excuse because we gotta win right now, we gotta play well right now.
