A rare mid-week scrimmage game between Georgia Class 6A Brookwood and Class 5A Heritage-Conyers was played with modified rules for three-quarters with the varsities.
Brookwood’s Jesse Brown rushed for touchdowns of 1 and 30 yards, wide receiver Dorian Miles caught touchdowns of 34 and 24 yards from quarterback William McCullough and the Broncos defense pitched a shutout in the 28-0 three-quarter victory. The fourth quarter was played in situational segments.
“We will look at the film tomorrow and it will be a good teaching tool for our kids,” Brookwood head coach Mark Crews said. “I think we ran the ball pretty well, pass protected pretty well but we have to get a little more crisp at doing certain things at certain times.
The strength defensively for the Broncos defense is at the linebacker spots led by senior Chase Middleton and sophomore Leonard Warner. Middleton made several bone-jarring hits while Warner had an interception during the situation portion of the scrimmage.
“I think our linebackers are little bit more athletic than last year. I think we’re more athletic in the secondary than we have been the last couple of years. We have a lot of work to do and a lot of learning to do,” Crews said. “All in all a pretty good day of practice.
Brookwood will open the regular season against Valdosta in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic at McEachern on August 23rd. Heritage-Conyers under first-year head coach Wendell Early will open the regular season against rival Rockdale County on August 22nd.
