Notes from the first round: Region 7 and Region 8 consisting of Gwinnett County combined to go 7-1 in the first round. Region 8 was the only region that went 4-0 in the first round while Region 7 was 3-1. Region 1 went 2-2 in the first round with Camden County and Colquitt County winning while Lowndes and Valdosta both lost. Region 5, headlined by No.1 Lassiter, went 0-4 in the first round and have no teams advancing to the second round. Lovejoy was the only Region 2 team to advance to the second round. Region 2 had two of the three teams in the playoffs that had losing records during the regular season (Rockdale County and Alcovy). Region 3 went 3-1 in the first round with only Tri-Cities being the only team that did not advance. Region 6 went 1-3 in the first round with only West Forsyth advancing. There were three shutouts in the first round and the most points scored in a game were 66 by West Forsyth.
Camden County’s Antonio Wimbush rushed for three touchdowns (17, 17 and 1 yards) and J.J. Green rushed for one for 73-yards. Hillgrove’s Evan Engram had two touchdown receptions of 65 and 85 yards respectively. Jacob Johnson, Tyler Rawls and Marcus Jordan each had touchdown runs and Grant Gabriel kicked a 27-yard field goal for Camden County.
Brookwood’s Brandon Morrow kicked a 32-yard field in overtime to beat No.1 Lassiter 24-21. Zach Moon tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Ky Priester with less than 10 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Mill Creek’s Byrson King nailed a 25-yard field goal with less than 10 second remaining in the fourth quarter to beat Alpharetta 41-39. Mill Creek led 17-0 at one point in the second quarter. Jacorey Lewis rushed for over 300 yards and scored all five touchdowns for Mill Creek.
Grayson’s Wayne Gallman rushed for two touchdowns and caught another in Grayson’s 49-9 win over a much improved Wheeler team. Grayson rushed for over 400 yards as a team in the game.
North Gwinnett quarterbacks Michael Haynes (4) and Hayden Sphire (2) combined to throw for six touchdown passes in their 49-19 win over Johns Creek. Cam Lewis had a rushing touchdown for North Gwinnett.
Lovejoy allowed 13 points in their 51-13 win over Tri-Cities. It was the most points they had allowed in a game since September 14th in a 43-24 win over Alpharetta. Travis Custis scored four touchdowns and Brandon Davis returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown and a blocked field goal 88 yards for a touchdown. for Lovejoy. Tri-Cities entered the playoffs with a losing record despite high expectations for the season a veteran and highly recruited offensive line.
South Gwinnett led 27-7 at halftime before holing on to win over Milton 27-20. South Gwinnett rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another one.
Colquitt County’s Cole Segraves passed for over 350 yards with a touchdown pass and also rushed for one. John Boatwright also rushed for two touchdown and Bobby Hill had over 130 yards receiving in Colquitt’s 30-28 win over McEachern. Ty Griffin rushed for two touchdowns and Ty Clemons passed for another for McEachern. McEachern’s final drive ended when Ty Griffin was intercepted by Colquitt’s Bull Barge who ran out the clock.
Parkview’s Justis Rosser rushed for game winning touchdown in the second overtime to give Parkview the 20-17 win over Walton. Rosser also had a 50-yard touchdown run and Shaq Vereen had a rushing touchdown. Walton standout running back Tyren Jones did not play due to a knee injury suffered late in the regular season.
Marietta and Lowndes were tied at 3 at the end of the first quarter before Marietta pulled away and then hung on for the 30-27 win. Anthony Jennings passed for three touchdowns including one for 92 yards and rushed for one from 88 yards out. Tiquan Lang returned a kickoff for a touchdown and rushed for another one. Ahmad Brown also had a rushing touchdown for Lowndes.
Norcross quarterback Joseph Wilbur tossed three touchdowns to Myles Autry, Alvin Kamara and Trey Smith in Norcross’ 34-7 win over Chattahoocee. Kamara also rushed for two touchdowns. Chattahoocee’s only touchdown was scored by the defense when they recovered a fumble in the end zone in the second half. Norcross will meet South Gwinnett in the second round, they defeated South Gwinnett 35-20 in the season opener.
Langston Hughes picked up their first ever playoff win in their first ever playoff game in the schools four-year history beating one of the three teams in the 6A playoffs that had a losing record during the regular season in Rockdale County 37-7. Rockdale County entered the playoffs with only 3 wins during the regular season.
Newnan recorded its second shutout of the season with a 38-0 win over Alcocy. Kelvin Khayyam had two rushing touchdowns and Byrant Bailey passed for a touchdown for Newnan. Alcovy was one of three teams in the 6A playoffs that had a losing record. Alcovy lost their final two games by a combined score of 94-0 (loss to Lovejoy 56-0 in the regular season finale)
East Coweta defeated Newton 25-20 to advance to the second round. Dee Godfrey had three rushing touchdowns and an interception for East Coweta.
West Forysth defeated Collins Hill in an offensive showcase 66-41.
