ML King Earns Second Consecutive Shutout, Beats Southwest Dekalb 18-0

ML King defeated Southwest Dekalb 18-0 Saturday night in Clarkston, GA using all facets of the game to chalk up their second shutout of the season, improving to 2-0 in 2012. Quarterback Montqavious Johnson guided a balanced ML King offense on its opening drive which ended with a 27-yard field goal by Kra. On Southwest Dekalb’s opening possession trailing 3-0, the ML King defense and special teams would enter the game. SWD would get hit with delay of game and substitution penalties and were on their own 7-yard line lining up to punt. ML King got a rush and blocked it in the end zone, the Panthers recovered it for a safety giving King a 5-0 baseball score looking lead.

Southwest Dekalb would put together a drive down to the ML King 12-yard line before settling for and missing a 39-yard field goal.

Johnson would then warm up hitting Demarquis Polite-Bray and Donald Clark for nice yardage on passing plays, then handing off to bruising back Jamel Smith with back to back carries totaling 15 yards, setting up a 36-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Polite-Bray on the next play for a 12-0 ML King lead after a successful PAT.

“He was able to come in this week, get the jitters out from last week, settle down, read the defense and play ball, the guy was all-county last year”, ML King head coach Rober Freeman said about his starting quarterback.

The Panthers would miss a field goal from 34-yards out after a 10-play drive stalled on their next possession and it was 12-0 at the intermission.

In the third ML King put the game away halting another SWD drive with solid defense, a defense that saw JaCarthy Mack, Chaka Diarrassouba, Hector Stanback and others making multiple plays all night. King would line up, mix pass and run as Johnson hit four straight passes on a  61-yard 13-play drive capped with a Jeremy Tyler 6-yard touchdown run and an 18-0 lead. That lead would be held by the ML King defense as the posted their second consecutive shutout to open the 2012 season. King shutout Stockbridge 23-0 in their season opener last week.

“I just like the way they [the defense] get to the ball, they play assignment football. We bent a little bit but we didn’t break, we were able to get stops when we needed them so that helped us out big time”, Freemen stated.

Montqavious Johnson finished 15-24 190 yards and a touchdown on the night hitting Donald Clark 5 times for 85 yards and Polite-Bray 3 times for 63 yards and a touchdown. Jamel Smith rushed 4 times for an important bruising 24 yards while Clark, Spencer Williams and Reynard Whyte shared other rushing duties.

“We have a good run game and then we can throw the ball. This year we wanted to be balanced out, we have three or four running backs that can run the ball and we have to use them and be smart with the clock…Oh man Jamel [Smith] is a monster as you can see the other defenses don’t want to tackle him and he runs hard”, Freeman replied when asked about balance.

ML King will face Mays next Friday. Mays defeated Miller Grove 34-7 last Friday night. Southwest Dekalb will take on Lakeside-Dekalb who defeated Dunwoody 28-14.
